MULRAJ, DIWAN (1814-1851), son of Diwan Savan Mall, the governor of Multan, served as the kardar of Shuja`abad and Jharig during the lifetime of his father. He succeeded his father to the governorship of Multan after the latter`s death on 29 September 1844. The subah of Multan then included the territories of Jharig and the Derajat, and he had to pay to government annually a sum of 23,00,000 rupees. Raja Hira Singh, gaining power at the court, imposed a heavy nazrana, or succession fee, of about 30 lakhs of rupees on Mill Raj, which he was unable to pay. But Mul Raj`s real troubles began when Lal Singh became the prime minister in November 1845.

Shamsher Singh Sheri, alias Karam Singh, was a communist leader in India. Sheri was born in 1942 in the village of Khokhar Kalan, in the Sangrur district, Punjab. Soon after his birth his father died. He was married to Harbans Kaur in 1957. Harbans was only nine years old at the time.Sheri joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) and went underground 1969-1970. He took active part in the armed struggle of the party. His wife and sister-in-law were imprisoned for three months and tortured. His brothers and friends were also tortured by the police.

MUKANDA, BHAI, was a devoted Sikh of the time of Guru Arjan. Once he, accompanied by Bhai Mula Beri and Bhai Tirath and Bhai Nihalu, a goldsmith, waited upon Guru Arjan. They asked a question : "0 True King, how is it that while exposition of the Sabda, or sacred hymns, by some Sikhs mellows the heart and is readily absorbed by the mind, sermons delivered by others have no effect at all?" The Guru, according to Bhai Mani Singh, Sikhdn di Bhagat Maid, said: "Only he who has himself assimilated the sabda can quench the seekers` thirst.

RAM SINGH, a holy man maintaining a dharamsala at Zahura, near Tanda, in Hoshiarpur district, assisted Bhai Maharaj Singh, the leader of the anti British rebellion of 1848-49, not only by lodging him and his followers in his dharamsala but also introducing him to several influential men of the area. After the rebels` arrest towards the close of 1849, Ram Singh too was detained at Lahore. He was later set free and permitted to proceed on pilgrimage to holy places, but his dharamsala at Zahura was razed by the government by way of punishment.
