NANAKI

NANAKI

NANAKI (d. 1856), daughter of Sham Singh Atarivala, was married in March 1837 to Prince Nau Nihal Singh, son of Prince Kharak Singh and grandson of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. To the marriage, the most ostentatious of oriental marriages, were invited the Governor General, the Lieutenant Governor of the North-West Province, and other British dignitaries. Sir Henry Fane, the Commander-in-Chief, alone was able to come.

A very colourful account of the wedding is preserved in the book Five Years in India written by Henry Edward Fane, aidedecamp to the Commander-in-Chief.The Rani became a widow in 1840. She died in November 1856.
