GAURA, BHAI

GAURA, BHAI, the elder son of Bhai Bhagatu (d. 1652), a devout and leading Sikh since the time of Guru Arjan, was a brave warrior who had carved out an extensive estate for himself around his native village Vinjhu, 14 km north of Bathinda (30"14`N, 74Â°59`E). Owing to a misunderstanding, Bhai Bhagatu, while on his last visit to Kartarpur to see Guru Har Rai in 1651, had made a young peasant girl believe that he had vowed to make her his wife. The girl considered herself the wife of the old Bhai, who had died soon after the incident, and would not remarry. When Gaura came to know this, he brought the girl to his house and ever treated her as his mother.

The following year, when Guru Har Rai visiting sangats in the Malva region, came to Vinjhu, Gaura served him devotedly and accompanied the Guru`s train through his own neighbourhood. One day, angered by an insulting remark made byJassa, one of the Guru`s attendants, about his stepmother, Gaura had the former assassinated. Guru Har Rai forbade Gaura`s presence in sangat. Gaura was repentant and wanted to tender apology but the Guru would not grant him an audience. He, with a few hundred of his men, therefore followed the Guru`s progress to Kiratpur, keeping a few kilometres behind him.

A few months later as Guru Har Rai, on his way to Kartarpur, had just crossed the River Sutlej, his family and the baggage still on the other bank, a Mughal force attacked his rear. But Bhai Gaura, who as usual was following close behind, chased the attackers away and helped the Guru`s party safely cross the river. When Guru Har Rai came to know of this, he called Gaura to his presence, pardoned his past crime and giving him his blessing sent him back to his home in the Malva, where he flourished as a virtual ruler of a vast tract. One of his descendants, Bhai Desu Singh, founded the autonomous state of Kaithal in 1767.

AJlT SINGH (1881-1947), patriot and revolutionary, was born in February 1881 at Khatkar Kalari, in Jalandhar district of the Punjab, the son of Arjan Singh and Jai Kaur. He had his early education in his village and then at Sain Dass Anglo Sanskrit High School, Jalandhar, and D.A.V. College, Lahore. He later joined the Bareilly College to study law, but left without completing the course owing to ill health. He became a munshi or teacher of Oriental languages, establishing himself at Lahore. In 1903, he was married to Harnam Kaur, daugher of Dhanpat Rai, a pleader of Kasur.

ACHAL SAHIB, GURDWARA. sacred to Guru Nanak, is located on the boundary of Salho and Chahal villages along the Jalandhar Batala road, 6 km south of Batala (31M9\'N, 75Â°12\'E) in Gurdaspur district of the Punjab. The low mound on which the Gurdwara is situated, in close proximity of the ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Kartikeya, son of Lord Shiva, is popularly known as Achal Vatala. ABD USSAMAD KHAN (d. 1737), governor of Lahore from 1713 to 1726, a descendant of the Naqashbandi saint `Abdulla Ahrar, a great grandson of Khwaja Baki of Baghdad, was born at Agra when his father, Khwaja `Abd ul-Karim Ansari, had come out with his family from Samarkand on a tour of India during the reign of Emperor Aurangzib. When Samad Khan was two years old, his parents returned to Samarkand where he passed the early years of his life and where he attained the office of Shaikh ul Islam. Soon thereafter he came to India obtaining appointment at the court of Aurangzeb. He served for many years in the Deccan without attracting much notice.

BHAN SINGH (d. 1917), a Ghadr activist, was the son of Savan Singh, of the village of Sunet, in Ludhiana district of the Punjab. As a young man, Bhan Singh migrated to Shanghai and then moved to America where he started taking interest in Ghadr activity. He was among those who returned to India to make Ghadr or armed revolution in the country. Travelling by the Tosa Maru he reached Calcutta on 19 October 1914, but was arrested and interned in Montgomery jail.
