KAHN SINGH 3

KAHN SINGH (d. 1846), son of Panjab Singh of Gharjakh, in Gujranwala district, joined Maharaja Ranjit Singh`s army and was sent to Pindi Gheb in command of 500 horse. He remained there for nine years when he was recalled and placed under General Hari Singh Nalva. Kahn Singh accompanied Hari Singh on his numerous expeditions. He fought in the campaign against the Yusafzai tribes on the northwest frontier in 1831. In 1834, he accompanied General Mihari Singh, the newly appointed governor of Kashmir. Kahn Singh returned after three years to Lahore with a considerable fortune.

His son, Lahina Singh, married the daughter of his old commander Hari Singh Nalva, who took his son in law with him to Peshawar in the campaign of 1837 in which the great general was killed. During the reigns of Maharaja Kharak Singh and Maharaja Sher Singh, Kahn Singh and his three sons Fateh Singh Jodha Singh, Lahina Singh were treated with favour and received military appointments but when Raja Hira Singh rose to power, trouble came upon the family and not until Jawahar Singh became minister did it regain its former position. Kahn Singh was killed by a musketshot in 1846 during the first AngloSikh war.

ABUL FAZL (1551-1602), principal secretary-cum-minister to Akbar, the Mughal emperor. He was an accomplished man of learning and was the author of two celebrated works, A`ini Akbari and Akbar-nama, the former being a description of Akbar`s administrative system and the latter a chronicle of the events of his reign. Like his father, Shaikh Mubarak, and brother, Faizi, Abul Fazl had Sufi leanings, and all three of them were a major influence in moulding the religious policy of the emperor. Born at Akbarabad on 14 January 1551, Abul Fazl took up service at the royal court in 1574, and through his uncommon wisdom and learning soon rose to become Akbar`s most trusted adviser.

BUDDH SINGH MAN (d. 1856), son of Mana Singh, entered the service of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1816 as a khidmatgar (attendant). He rose to the command of 30 horse, and was given a.jagir worth 17,000 rupees. Later, he was promoted a colonel in General Court`s brigade. According to British records, he commanded four regiments of infantry, one regiment of cavalry, and two troops of artillery. He remained on active duty during Maharaja Sher Singh`s reign, but because of his relationship with Atar Singh Sandhanvalia, a confirmed opponent of the Maharaja, he was reduced in rank.
