LANG

LANG, a village 11 km northwest of Patiala city (30Â°20`N, `ZG^G`E), claims a historical shrine called Gurdwara Dukh Bhanjan Sahib Patshahi Nauvin. The designation Dukh Bhanjan is only a recent addition, the old name coming down the generations being Gurdwara NauvTri Patshahi. According to local tradition. Guru Tegh Bahadur halted here during his journey to the eastern parts in 1665. He arrived accompanied by his mother, his wife and a number of Sikhs. The shrine established to commemorate tlic holy visit was originally a small hut.

It was replaced by a proper Manji Sahib by Maharaja Karam Singh of Patiala (1798-1845), who also made an endowment of 500 bighas of land. Under postIndependence tenancy laws, the tenants became owners of all but seven bighds. The building was reconstructed by Sant Chhota Singh (d. 1975) who looked after the shrine for two decades. A small square room, constructed over the spot where he was cremated, is being developed into a picture gallery containing paintings of scenes from Sikh history. The main building consists of a square assembly hall, with the sanctum in the centre marking the site of the original Manji Sahib. A domed square room has been constructed on the first floor over the sanctum. The Gurdwara is managed by a committee of local Sikhs.

Shamsher Singh Sheri, alias Karam Singh, was a communist leader in India. Sheri was born in 1942 in the village of Khokhar Kalan, in the Sangrur district, Punjab. Soon after his birth his father died. He was married to Harbans Kaur in 1957. Harbans was only nine years old at the time.Sheri joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) and went underground 1969-1970. He took active part in the armed struggle of the party. His wife and sister-in-law were imprisoned for three months and tortured. His brothers and friends were also tortured by the police.

ABD USSAMAD KHAN (d. 1737), governor of Lahore from 1713 to 1726, a descendant of the Naqashbandi saint `Abdulla Ahrar, a great grandson of Khwaja Baki of Baghdad, was born at Agra when his father, Khwaja `Abd ul-Karim Ansari, had come out with his family from Samarkand on a tour of India during the reign of Emperor Aurangzib. When Samad Khan was two years old, his parents returned to Samarkand where he passed the early years of his life and where he attained the office of Shaikh ul Islam. Soon thereafter he came to India obtaining appointment at the court of Aurangzeb. He served for many years in the Deccan without attracting much notice.

ABDUL RASUL KASHMIRI, a native of Srinagar who was in trade at Amritsar as a shawl merchant, was for a time a close confidant of Maharaja Duleep Singh, the last Sikh King of the Punjab deposed by the British in 1849. BANDA SINGH BAHADUR (1670-1716). eighteenth century Sikh warrior who for the first time seized territory for the Khalsa and paved the way for the ulimate conquest of the Punjab by them, was born Lachhman Dev on 27 October 1670 at Rajauri in the Punchh district of Kashmir. According to Hakim Rai, AhwaliLachhman Das urfBanda Sahib, his father Ram Dev, a ploughman, came of the Sodhi subcaste. Lachhman Dev had a very tender heart and the sight of a dying doe during one of the hunting excursions proved a turning point in his life.
