SIANA SAYYIDAN

SIANA SAYYIDAN, a village in Kurukshetra district of Haryana 5 km from Pehowa (29"59`N, 76"35`E), is the birthplace of Sayyid Shah Bhikh or Bhikhan Shah, a Muslim saint, who guided by intuition and divine inspiration, had gone to pay obeisance to the child Gobind at Lakhnaur in 1670. There are two historical gurdwa.ras in this village. GURDWARA DAMDAMA SAHIB. Guru Gobind Singh had not forgotten this elderly devotee, and, when he visited Kurukshetra and Pehowa in 1702, he detoured into this village and halted there for a night.

The site where he had encamped is now marked by Gurdwara Damdama Sahib. The present building was raised during the 1960`s by Sant BabaJIvan Singh. It is located inside a walled compound and has a hall, with a white marble canopied platform for the Guru Granth Sahib in the middle of it. The facade of the hall is covered with marble dies and the entire compound has a marble floor. The ribbed lotus dome above the central pavilion on the first floor has also a white marble pinnacle.

The khan da on top of the flagmast is goldplated. Another walled compound near by has rooms for the granthi and for the Guru ka Langar. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee manages the shrine through the committee which looks after Gurdwara Baoli Sahib at Pehowa. GURDWARA JORA SAHIB. The descendants of Bhai Jhanda, one of Guru Nanak`s disciples, were also living in this village following a carpenter`s trade. They came to pay homage and took the Guru to their house. One of them presented him with a pair of wooden sandals.

The Guru was pleased and not only accepted the present but also left his own pair of shoes (jora, in Punjabi) in the house. This family is no longer living in Siana, but the Guru`s shoes, embriodered in red and white silk thread, are still kept reverentially in a glass case at the Gurdwara inside the village known as Gurdwara Jora (lit. pair; pair of shoes) Sahib.It is a single flatroofed room, housing the holy relic as well as the Guru Granth Sahib. The Gurdwara is administered by the village sangat.

ADAM, BHAI, also mentioned as Uddam in some chronicles, was, according to Giani Gian Singh, Twarikh Guru Khalsa, a Siddhu Jatt of Brar clan living at Vinjhu, a village near Bathinda (30Â°-14`N, 74Â°-58\'E). He had no male child and, advancing in years, he along with his wife came to Amritsar to devote himself to serving Guru Ram Das. Besides partaking of the holy sangat morning and evening, he daily brought two loads of firewood from the jungle, one of which he contributed to the Guru ka Langar, selling part of the second to buy food for himself and storing the remainder. Once on an extremely cold night a large number of Sikhs arrived to visit the Guru.

AJIT SINGH SANDHANVALIA (d. 1843), son of Basava Singh Sandharivalia, was a leading actor in the gruesome drama of intrigue and murder enacted in the Sikh kingdom following the passing away of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. ACHAL SAHIB, GURDWARA. sacred to Guru Nanak, is located on the boundary of Salho and Chahal villages along the Jalandhar Batala road, 6 km south of Batala (31M9\'N, 75Â°12\'E) in Gurdaspur district of the Punjab. The low mound on which the Gurdwara is situated, in close proximity of the ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Kartikeya, son of Lord Shiva, is popularly known as Achal Vatala. Shamsher Singh Sheri, alias Karam Singh, was a communist leader in India. Sheri was born in 1942 in the village of Khokhar Kalan, in the Sangrur district, Punjab. Soon after his birth his father died. He was married to Harbans Kaur in 1957. Harbans was only nine years old at the time.Sheri joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) and went underground 1969-1970. He took active part in the armed struggle of the party. His wife and sister-in-law were imprisoned for three months and tortured. His brothers and friends were also tortured by the police.

MUKARRAMPUR. locally called Makaroripur, is 14 km from Sirhind (SOWN, 76Â°23`E). The village has five different historical shrines. GURDWARA PATSHAHI CHHEVIN, NAUMI ATE DASVIN is the principal Sikh shrine of Mukarrampur. The site is sacred to three of the Gurus. According to local tradition Guru Tegh Bahadur was here on the fullmoon day ofHar 1732 Bk which corresponds to 28 June 1675. Guru Gobind Singh is also believed to have stayed here for two days when, as a child, he was being escorted from Patna to Anandpur. Guru Hargobind, too, is said to have visited the village in the course of a journey through this part of the countryside. The present building was constructed during the 1940`s. Standing on a high plinth, it comprises a square hall, with a domed sanctum in the centre and a verandah around it. The Gurdwara is managed by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee through a local committee which looks after other shrines in the village as well. Special divans take place on every fullmoon day. The major festival of the year is held on the fullmoon day in the month of Har. GURDWARA SAHIB PATSHAHI 9 is situated inside the village. It is said that, while Guru Tegh Bahadur was staying under a ber tree outside the village, a couple, Mat Mari and her husband Rup Chand, supplicated him to visit their humble dwelling. The Guru granted their wish. This Gurdwara marks the site of the couple`s house. The present building, constructed in 1975, has a domed square sanctum, within a rectangular hall. GURDWARA PAHILl PATSHAHI, a mound called Isarkhel Theh, about one kilometre from the village, marks the site where Guru Nanak is said to have once stayed. The present building constructed in the early 1970`s, within a walled compound, has a square hall, with the sanctum in the middle of it. BUNGA SAHIB and SHAHiD GANJ. Both these shrines, inside the village, are connected with Banda Singh Bahadur`s attack on Sirhind in 1710. The main battle was fought at Chappar Chin, near presentday Chandigarh, but, as the Sikhs pressed on towards Sirhind, the retreating imperial troops put up some resis tance at Mukarrampur. The Mughal force was defeated, but several Sikhs fell in the action. A memorial was raised in their honour inside the village. This has since been replaced by the present Shahid Garij, a small domed square room in which the Guru Granth Sahib is seated. The Buriga Sahib, on the outskirts of the village, is of recent construction and is dedicated to Baba Banda Singh Bahadur. It consists of a single domed square room, in which the Guru Granth Sahib is seated on a low platform.
