1842

DE LA ROCHE, HENRI FRANCOIS STANISLAUS (d. 1842), a Frenchman born in Mauritius, served in the army of Begam Samru. As the force was disbanded by the British after the Begam`s death, he came to Lahore in 1838 and took up service under Maharaja Ranjit Singh as a cavalry officer on a salary of Rs 500 per month. Apart from army duties, he was occasionally deputed to settle boundary disputes on the Sikh frontier.

ELLENBOROUGH, LORD EDWARD LAW (1790-1871), Governor General of India (1842-44), son of Edward Law, Baron Ellen borough, Lord Chief Justice of England, was born on 8 September 1790. He was educated at Eton and at St John`s College, Cambridge. He became a member of the House of Lords in 1818. He was appointed Lord Privy Seal in 1828 and president of the Board of Control (1828-30) whence began his connection with Indian affairs. He succeeded Lord Auckland as Governor General of India in February 1842. On his arrival in India, Lord Ellenborough found himself confronted with an alarming situation in Afghanistan and northwest frontier.

GOULD, JOHN (d. 1842), an English soldier of fortune who arrived at Lahore with his brother in law Colonel Van Cortlandt. He took up service under Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1834. He commanded a battalion of the Sikh army and remained in servk :e for eight years till his death in 1842 at Firoxpur.

NIJATULLAH SHAH, SAYYID, British news writer at the Sikh capital of Lahore. Press lists of old records refer to his news diaries which give an account of the political state of affairs in the kingdom. He reports the events at Peshawar, the withdrawal of the British garrison at Jalalabad, and the return of the British army from Kabul in 1842.
