RAGHUPAT RAI NIJJHAR

RAGHUPAT RAI NIJJHAR

RAGHUPAT RAI NIJJHAR, a rich landlord of Khem Karan in present day Amritsar district, was a devout Sikh. He called on Guru Tegh Bahadur at Goindval in 1664, and requested that he be pleased to visit his native Khem Karan. Guru Tegh Bahadur accepted the invitation and came to Khem Karan where Raghupat Rai served him with devotion. The Guru imparted instruction to many who came from the surrounding villages to see him.

Gurdwara Gurusar Sahib now marks the site where he had encamped. Raghupat Rai presented a pedigree mare to the Guru as a farewell offering. His son, Amar Singh, subsequently received the rites of the Khalsa and joined the force of Banda Singh Bahadur. He was a leader of the Bandai faction during the early l720`s.
