MAN SINGH, JUSTICE

MAN SINGH, JUSTICE (1887-1949), known as Bhai Man Singh up to his thirties, was born in 1887 at Ambala, now in Haryana, the youngest of the three sons of Nand Singh who had fought against the British in the second AngloSikh war (1849) and had then worked under them as superintendent of excise. Man Singh, who became an orphan at a very young age, attended successively Mission High School and A.S. High School in his native town and later joined the Khalsa College at Amritsar. While at school he had founded an association of Sikh youth, Khalsa Bhujharigi Dal, and now in Amritsar he took a leading part in setting up Khalsa Youngnnen Association and was the editor of its journal from 1905 to 1909.

He was still reading for his B.A. final, when he was nominated a member of the Chief Khalsa Diwan. After his graduation he joined the Law College at Lahore and, on completing his Bachelor`s course, returned to Ambala to start his legal practice. He was elected to the Central Legislative Assembly from the East Punjab Sikh Constituency in 1921. In 1922, Man Singh shifted to Lahore and practised as a lawyer at the Punjab Chief Court. He was vice-president of the Chief Khalsa Diwan from 1923 to 1925 and secretary of the reception committee of the Sikh Educational Conference session held at Lahore in 1926.

He was legal adviser to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee from 1926 to 1929. From 1930 to 1932, he worked as an officiating judge of the High Court in Patiala state. In 1935, he was appointed a judge of the Sikh Gurdwaras Tribunal and president of the Sikh Gurdwaras Judicial Commission. He worked in that capacity up to 1943 when he was appointed a member of the Judicial Committee in the princely state of Faridkot. The Judicial Committee heard appeals arising from the judgements of the Faridkot High Court. Man Singh retained this position until the formation of Patiala and East Punjab States Union (PEPSU) in 1948.

In November 1948, he was appointed an officiating judge of the newly established High Court of PEPSU. Besides his legal work, Man Singh translated into Punjabi verse two Sanskrit classics Vikramorvasi by Kalidasa and Vairdgya Sataka by Bhartnhari. He also contributed articles regularly to several of the Sikh magazines and newspapers. Among the tracts he wrote in Punjabi was Science to Astiktd which became popular reading. His translation ofKhyam`s Rubd`ldt remained unfinished. Man Singh died at Patiala on 7 January 1949.

BHAN SINGH (d. 1917), a Ghadr activist, was the son of Savan Singh, of the village of Sunet, in Ludhiana district of the Punjab. As a young man, Bhan Singh migrated to Shanghai and then moved to America where he started taking interest in Ghadr activity. He was among those who returned to India to make Ghadr or armed revolution in the country. Travelling by the Tosa Maru he reached Calcutta on 19 October 1914, but was arrested and interned in Montgomery jail.

ABDULLA, KHWAJA, a native of Mani Majra, near present day Chandigarh, was the keeper of the jail at Chandni Chowk kotwali in Delhi, where Guru Tegh Bahadur, Nanak IX, was detained under imperial warrant. He was a pious man and truly reverenced the holy detenu. He tried to mitigate the rigour of his incarceration as far as his official position permitted. After Guru Tegh Bahadur`s execution (1675), he resigned his post and went to live at Anandpur, where he served Guru Gobind Singh, Nanak X, as a physician. His son, Ghulam Abbas, served under Nawab Kapur Singh as a physician during misl times.

\'ABDULLA BHAI\', Abdul according to some Sikh chroniclers, was a Muslim minstrel who recited heroic balladry at Sikh congregations in the time of Guru Hargobind (1595-1644). Abdul was born in the village of Sursingh, now in Amritsar district of the Punjab. He first came to Amritsar in 1606 at the time of the installation ceremony for Guru Hargobind at the Akal Takht. According to Gurbilas Chhevin Patshahi, he and his companion, Bhai Nattha, sang the stanza on the occasion: The Throne everlasting Has by the Holy Guru\'s presence become haloed, Indescribable is its splendour, How may I sing its glory! Seeing the Guru, Both the sun and the moon were shamed.

AJIT SINGH SANDHANVALIA (d. 1843), son of Basava Singh Sandharivalia, was a leading actor in the gruesome drama of intrigue and murder enacted in the Sikh kingdom following the passing away of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. One of the younger generation of the Sandharivalias, he outstripped his uncles, Atar Singh Sandharivalia and Lahina Singh Sandharivalia, in political ambition and conspiracy. In 1840, on his return from the expedition against the Raja of Mandi, he joined his uncles in supporting Rani Chand Kaur`s claim against Sher Singh.

MUKARRAMPUR. locally called Makaroripur, is 14 km from Sirhind (SOWN, 76Â°23`E). The village has five different historical shrines. GURDWARA PATSHAHI CHHEVIN, NAUMI ATE DASVIN is the principal Sikh shrine of Mukarrampur. The site is sacred to three of the Gurus. According to local tradition Guru Tegh Bahadur was here on the fullmoon day ofHar 1732 Bk which corresponds to 28 June 1675. Guru Gobind Singh is also believed to have stayed here for two days when, as a child, he was being escorted from Patna to Anandpur. Guru Hargobind, too, is said to have visited the village in the course of a journey through this part of the countryside. The present building was constructed during the 1940`s. Standing on a high plinth, it comprises a square hall, with a domed sanctum in the centre and a verandah around it. The Gurdwara is managed by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee through a local committee which looks after other shrines in the village as well. Special divans take place on every fullmoon day. The major festival of the year is held on the fullmoon day in the month of Har. GURDWARA SAHIB PATSHAHI 9 is situated inside the village. It is said that, while Guru Tegh Bahadur was staying under a ber tree outside the village, a couple, Mat Mari and her husband Rup Chand, supplicated him to visit their humble dwelling. The Guru granted their wish. This Gurdwara marks the site of the couple`s house. The present building, constructed in 1975, has a domed square sanctum, within a rectangular hall. GURDWARA PAHILl PATSHAHI, a mound called Isarkhel Theh, about one kilometre from the village, marks the site where Guru Nanak is said to have once stayed. The present building constructed in the early 1970`s, within a walled compound, has a square hall, with the sanctum in the middle of it. BUNGA SAHIB and SHAHiD GANJ. Both these shrines, inside the village, are connected with Banda Singh Bahadur`s attack on Sirhind in 1710. The main battle was fought at Chappar Chin, near presentday Chandigarh, but, as the Sikhs pressed on towards Sirhind, the retreating imperial troops put up some resis tance at Mukarrampur. The Mughal force was defeated, but several Sikhs fell in the action. A memorial was raised in their honour inside the village. This has since been replaced by the present Shahid Garij, a small domed square room in which the Guru Granth Sahib is seated. The Buriga Sahib, on the outskirts of the village, is of recent construction and is dedicated to Baba Banda Singh Bahadur. It consists of a single domed square room, in which the Guru Granth Sahib is seated on a low platform.
