JAWAHAR SINGH, BHAI (d. 1924), one of the Jailo martyrs, was the son of Bhai Khetu, a Mahabt Sikh of the village of Kundal in Fazilka lahsll of Firozpur district. He had served in the army for about five years during which time he had been admitted to the rites of the Khalsa. He had also learnt to read and write enough Punjabi to become a fluent reader of the Scripture. He had become an Akalt activist and joined the first shahidi jathd or martyrs` column ready to die to have the sacrilege at Jailo indemnified. The jathd was fired upon by police as it readied near the Gurdwara on 21 February 1924. Bhai Jawahar Singh was one of those who died in the firing.

ACHAL SAHIB, GURDWARA. sacred to Guru Nanak, is located on the boundary of Salho and Chahal villages along the Jalandhar Batala road, 6 km south of Batala (31M9\'N, 75°12\'E) in Gurdaspur district of the Punjab. The low mound on which the Gurdwara is situated, in close proximity of the ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Kartikeya, son of Lord Shiva, is popularly known as Achal Vatala. The Achal temple had since old times been a place of pilgrimage visited by sadhus from distant parts, especially during the annual fair held on the occasion of Sivaratri festival.
Shamsher Singh Sheri, alias Karam Singh, was a communist leader in India. Sheri was born in 1942 in the village of Khokhar Kalan, in the Sangrur district, Punjab. Soon after his birth his father died. He was married to Harbans Kaur in 1957. Harbans was only nine years old at the time.Sheri joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) and went underground 1969-1970. He took active part in the armed struggle of the party. His wife and sister-in-law were imprisoned for three months and tortured. His brothers and friends were also tortured by the police.
